Defending a claim
You have been threatened with proceedings
We read the claim, tell you honestly how exposed you are and whether it can still be settled, and if it cannot, help you choose the right litigation firm to defend it.
We aim to avoid litigation, but if necessary, we’ll guide and support you in appointing a law firm that is best suited to provide expert legal representation throughout your case.

Most businesses have never run a court case, and the first one is disorienting. Who to instruct, what it will cost, what the letters mean and whether to settle are decisions made under pressure. These are the moments our clients call us at Lawyerly.
Defending a claim
We read the claim, tell you honestly how exposed you are and whether it can still be settled, and if it cannot, help you choose the right litigation firm to defend it.
Bringing a claim
We match you with a regulated litigation firm that fits the size and type of your case, brief them properly and negotiate the fee arrangement on your behalf.
Litigation oversight
We stay alongside you throughout, translating the advice, checking the strategy and the bills, and making sure the commercial decision stays in your hands.
litigation support
Litigation is expensive and slow, which is why our first job is to keep you out of it. When it cannot be avoided, you should not face it alone or hand it over blind. We help you appoint the right firm, agree fair fees and stay involved as your own solicitor from start to finish.
Because we already know your business and the background, the litigation team starts with a proper brief rather than a blank page, which saves time and money.

We connect you with regulated litigation firms suited to your case, brief them on the facts and the commercial context, and help you choose with a clear view of cost and approach.
We stay alongside you as your solicitor, explaining the advice, reviewing the strategy at each stage and making sure you always know what is coming next and what it means.
Litigation fees are your own cost, so we negotiate the fee arrangement with the appointed firm, keep an eye on the bills and flag anything that does not look right.
With Lawyerly, it stops being a worry, and becomes an advantage.
We pair you with one of our qualified solicitors whose expertise and experience fits your business.

As Commercial Solicitor at Lawyerly, James brings that range to growing businesses that want advice of that standard without the apparatus of a traditional firm. He negotiates and manages contracts, advises on technology and intellectual property, and helps clients head off the disputes that derail growth. Jackie has spent twenty years working on how legal services reach the people and businesses that need them. Before co-founding Lawyerly she built and led one of Africa's largest alternative legal organisations, growing it to more than 300 people serving 100,000 clients, and her work there was recognised in legal services, technology, innovation and dispute resolution. She holds a PhD, awarded with distinction, and has been named among the top five women in legal technology.
At Lawyerly she is responsible for the firm's strategic direction. Her starting point has not changed in two decades: the law should work for the people who use it, rather than the other way round. That view shapes how Lawyerly is run, from how services are priced to how matters are staffed.

Willem co-founded Lawyerly after twenty years of running and advising businesses, most of which were spent as a client of law firms rather than a member of one. He had seen how legal advice tends to arrive: late, priced by the hour, and detached from the commercial decision that prompted it. Lawyerly grew out of a conviction that it could be done differently.
He read law and marketing at university and later completed MIT Sloan's executive programme in artificial intelligence and business strategy. His career before Lawyerly took in two advertising agencies, which he led through the industry's move to digital, several years in digital publishing, and a period in international development, working on programmes across South East Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
At Lawyerly he is responsible for growth and for the client experience, ensuring our clients receive the legal support they need.

Jan began his career in law before broadening into corporate strategy and technology. He holds a Master's in Corporate Law and an MBA, and later completed a Master's in Applied Data Science, driven by a conviction that the legal profession could do far more with the data it generates. That combination of legal, commercial, and analytical training has shaped a career spent rethinking how legal services are designed and delivered, with a particular focus on projects that use data and digital tools to improve legal processes.
As a director of Lawyerly, Jan is responsible for data and analytics, financial management and strategy, and brings legal grounding, commercial judgement and technical fluency to how the firm is run.

Answers to the questions we hear most often, on how the subscription works, what it covers and how we charge.
Lawyerly does not run court cases itself. What we do is help you avoid them where possible and, where a case is unavoidable, help you appoint a specialist litigation firm, negotiate their fees, brief them and stay alongside you as your own solicitor for the life of the case. You keep one trusted adviser who knows the business, and the litigation team gets a client who understands what is happening.
Our co-ordination and support is included in our subscription plans. The litigation firm’s fees, court fees and any other case costs are your own, which is why we negotiate the fee arrangement with them and keep an eye on the bills throughout.
Because good litigation is a specialism, and our model is built for the everyday legal needs of growing businesses rather than court work. You get a better result from a firm that does it every day, with us beside you to translate, challenge and keep the commercial picture in view.
By the type and value of the case, the sector, the court it will be heard in and the budget. We work with regulated firms we know and have seen perform, and we will tell you why we are suggesting a particular one. The choice is always yours.
Yes, and it is often the most valuable thing we do. Most cases settle before trial, and a settlement is a commercial decision as much as a legal one. We help you weigh the offer against the cost and risk of continuing, and work with the litigation team on the terms.
Send us the claim the day it arrives. Court deadlines are short and missing one can cost you the case. We tell you how exposed you are, whether it can be settled and, if it cannot, get the right firm instructed in time to respond properly.
A legal case rarely stands alone. These are the services our clients lean on alongside it.
Franchise agreements, disclosure documents and manual reviews for franchisors and franchisees, at every stage of building or joining a network.
ExploreUK GDPR compliance built around how the business actually operates, from the first privacy notice to the handling of a breach.
ExploreDrafting and reviewing the agreements you send and the ones you are asked to sign, so that each deal stands on terms that protect the business.
