HOW WE PRACTICE

Commercial legal work, on subscription

We do commercial legal work for growing businesses in England and Wales: drafting and reviewing contracts, structuring shareholder and founder arrangements, advising on employment, supporting funding rounds and exits, and resolving disputes when something has gone wrong.

We do it on subscription. A monthly fee, a dedicated solicitor who knows your business and handles your work end to end, and access to commercial legal work whenever you need it.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

The principles behind our practice

Four principles shape how we work: with you, with each other, and with the detail of every matter.

See the person, not the case

Every legal question has a person behind it, with pressures we may never see and decisions only they can make. We treat you as a person first, not a case file. That means listening before we advise, and understanding the business and the life around the question.

Say it in plain English

If you need a law degree to understand our advice, we haven't done our job. We strip away the jargon and the complexity that hides simple truths. The harder thinking happens before the email is sent, so you can act on it without translation.

Earn the trust

The small things compound. Showing up prepared. Following through. Catching what others overlook. We do every piece of work like it matters, because it does. Trust is built one detail at a time.

Stay curious, break conventions

"That's how it's always been done" is a sentence we don't trust. We ask the questions, learn from disciplines well beyond the law, and bring fresh thinking to old problems. Sharper lawyers, more useful advice.

A fixed monthly fee for legal work puts the lawyer and the business on the same side of the decision.

FOUNDER PERSPECTIVE

The six-minute unit is one of the strangest inheritances in modern professional life. A generation of lawyers decided the right way to value thinking was to slice it into ten-per-hour fragments and bill each one. Every email, every call, every paused beat to consider a problem became an entry on a ledger.

The quieter effect was on SMEs. Founders learned to hesitate. How long will this take? Can we afford one more question? The smart move was to ask less and wait until something had already broken.

I founded Lawyerly for three reasons. Predictability, because legal support should be a line in the budget, not a variable waiting to surprise the quarter. Proactivity, because when the meter is off, the call happens before the contract is signed, not after the dispute starts. Partnership, because ongoing work means the lawyer actually knows the business.

The hourly bill made law an event, something that happened to you. Subscription work makes it something quieter: useful at the moments useful things are needed.

MEAT THE TEAM

The people rethinking commercial law

Lawyerly's team brings together top-tier solicitors and global leaders in legal innovation. We’ve worked across continents, sectors, and industries, united by one vision: to make the law work better for business. With deep commercial experience and a modern mindset, we’re shaping a more innovative, connected way to deliver legal support.

SINCE 1993

Where we came from

Three decades of building legal services around the people and businesses using them. A million clients, one founding belief, and a model that has changed the economics of legal work.

1993

Founded on a different idea

Founded in South Africa with a question most firms weren't asking: what would legal work look like if it was built around the people using it, not the people billing for it?

2000

50,000 clients

Seven years in, fifty thousand people had bought legal services from a firm that had never sent an hourly bill. The economics worked. The model held. The lesson was that the way the rest of the industry priced legal work was a choice, not a law of nature.

2012

Innovation drives us

Before LegalTech was a phrase the industry used, we had built our own system to run the work. The principle was simple: technology should make the law easier to use, not harder. The same instinct guides every tool we build today, with much smarter technology behind it.

2017

Commercial law arrives

Founders had been asking for years: same model, same principle, but for their businesses. Commercial law is notoriously expensive precisely because it has never been built on economies of scale. We built it that way. Top commercial lawyers, on subscription, for the businesses that needed them.

2023

One million clients

The model crosses a million people served. Three decades after the first client walked through the door, the question that started it all has its answer: legal work built around the people using it can scale, and scale far.

2024

Lawyerly opens in England and Wales

Three decades of commercial legal work, now applied to founders and operators here. Same principles, in a model built around how you actually run a business.

ACROSS THE UK

Where we work

Wherever you are in England and Wales, we are ready to help. Most clients prefer working with us remotely because it's faster, more flexible and keeps fees lower, but we keep correspondence offices across the UK.
